both are good, but some times knowing your getting something for no reason is good, the anticipation makes it better, just make sure if you go that route that the presnt is good, otherwise it might back fire

It really isn't that hard to give a gift to someone. And the point that he's your "boyfriend" should make the problem less harsh. Just simply give him the gift @ any given point, just think of it as a present for your mom, your child, brother, etc. Give him the gift as if it's something that he needs.
