this is very frustrating as i cannot get onto the web long enough to download from microsoft download centre

Are you on dial up - if so you need to change your setting - you have a setting which states if the computer is not doing anything after so long close the Internet - the computer does not recognise that you are downloading and thinks you have left your computer on the Internet unknowingly.

Maybe it's some firewall thing; try reconfiguring your firewall if you have one. Or get a friend to burn say Netscape onto a CD-ROM and give it to you to install. That could help with online surfing until you find an antispyware utility or whatever is needed.
