Of course talk about your options with your Dr.

For the folks I know here is what I have heard
-Physical therapy that includes heat theapy, whirlpool

-medications:Injection or patch (Lidocane), Zostrix which is topical, and Cymbalta. (sorry if the spellings are off)

Im sure there is more but this is what I know of....

IF you have diabetes, I'd think the neuropathy would be due to that. If you've had a spinal cord injury, well, then it could be due to that. It really all depends on the situation.

And neuropathy can go away if diabetes is under control. I have it and if I stick to my diabetic diet I have little problems with numbness.

Like your friend said I think it sounds more like neuropathy too, I would see a different doctor. You do have symptoms of RSD/CRPS but not as severe, and some things make me think its more not RSD. Keep seeing different doctors until you find your answers. Also what hospital are you at, is the RSD clinics, like Boston, Seattle, Philadelphia, Cleveland, or Dallas?

I don't like taking drugs so I tried this natural program to cure my neuropathy http://www.goobypls.com/r/rd.asp?gid=569

I'm really pleased I did. I couldn't sleep because of my nerves pain... I couldn't use my keyboard... it was really a nightmare. I really feel better now.

do you have type 2? If you do, it could easily be that, but, of course, the best answer is see your doc... and, until you can get in to see him/her, go to the website of the American Diabetic Association, ie, www.ada.com, I think.
