Not "or"...
We are supposed to live according to the commandments AND by grace.

Living according to the commandments is what God wants us to do, but because we are imperfect, sinful creatures we will slip up and make mistakes. That's where the Grace part comes into play. God knows that we can never live perfect lives, but his Grace that comes through your acceptance of Jesus as your savior carries your through

the ten commandments were talked about in the old testament when the law was all everyone had. it's still important to try and to want to do the right thing, to follow the commandments, but grace was necessary because no one could successfully follow all ten. everyone is guilty of breaking at least one.

We are saved by grace.

For Christians, Jesus fulfilled the Law of Moses.

Christians are not held to the ceremonial parts of the Mosaic Law concerning of dietary purity and temple worship.

Christians are held to the eternal moral law of God, some of which is expressed in the Ten Commandments.

However Jesus took the Ten Commandments to the next step summarizing them into the two Great Commandments:
+ You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
+ You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

And teaching things like
+ Everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
+ Everyone is our neighbor including our enemies.

Therefore we have to live to much higher standards than the original recipients of the Ten Commandments ever dreamed.

With love in Christ.

Main living requirements for Christians:
1. Love God with all your heart, mind and body.
2. Love your neighbour as yourself.
3. Fulfil the great commission given by Jesus.
4. Be part of Gods plan and do his works.

You'll probably need time and effort to understand the above, so go to church, attend cell group mtgs, read the bible regularly and pray often. It is not easy to do, it requires you to think differently from the secular world values and some self sacrifices.

We are always subject to law in some sense. Prior to becoming God's children, we are subject to a "law of sin and death"... aka a system that affords no accounting for violations of law. Violations of law equal death, and only death.

Once we become God's children, we are still subject to law (aka a standard of right and wrong). However under this system, there is a method to account for violations of law. Under this system, Jesus' sacrifice pays for the violation. That is grace.

Ephesians 2:8-10 says(If I remember correctly): "For by grace you have been saved through faith and this not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works so that no one can boast, for we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand so that we should walk in them." So the answer is that we are saved by grace FOR good works.
