I would not recommend a conure for a pet with kids. I have 2 sun conures, they are beautiful, very load, and tend to like one person at a time> And you never know when they are coming to you to give a kiss are bite you. I think a coctiel would make a better pet for a family bird. They are sweet, mine know several songs and is very loving. I also have lovebirds and a green naped Amazon parrot that can talk very plain.

I have a Nanday conure. He is a 'rescue bird' who was abused by his previous owner, so he isn't very playful with me. But he does play with my other bird, a senegal, a lot. My nanday is EXTREMELY loud- ear-splitting, really. He screams when I uncover him in the morning. He screams when a car pulls into the driveway, when a dog walks by outside, when I vaccum, when its time to eat, and then again in the evening. Pretty typical parrot behavior, actually, except that his voice is extremely loud. Imagine the sqawk of a blue-jay, and then multiply it a million times, and you have something sort of like a calling nanday. I have heard other birds with similar volume levels, including Sun and Jenday conures. Pretty much any conure will be loud, I mean REALLY loud, with the exception of the green cheeked conures and possibly the dusky conure.

The cage size varies depending upon which species you get- some conures such as mitred conures can be very large and need Amazon-sized cages. Other smaller conures do Ok in a large cockatiel-sized cage... just rmemeber that when it comes to cages, bigger is always better.

I wouldn't trust a conure unsupervised with small children. At one point or another, all birds bite, and most conure's can pack quite a punch. Mine has broken the skin on my father's hand (he's a retired carpenter with tough skin!) a few times. On a small child, that kind of bite could do real damage. A better pet bird for children would be a cockatiel or parakeet. While they may still bite, they don't bite as hard. And they are much quieter and generally easier to care for.

For their size conures can get pretty loud, especially at "sun down". Most parrots (incl. hand fed babies) will bond most strongly with one family member so to keep them friendly with everyone it is important that they receive attention from all the members in their flock (thats all of you). Say one person in the family uncovers the cage in the morning, another provides the food, another puts out treats another time of day ... etc. Even then they will almost certainly bond or be closest to one family member and can be more aggressive towards others. This often means not everyone can go into the cage and bring the bird out for play. Most aggression is seen around the cage, so if the bird becomes "nippy" with others, they will generally still be friendly once their favorite or "mate" brings them out and plays with them first. If your bird isnt hand fed, its going to be hard to have anyone "tame" it who doesnt have many hours every day to devote to it. In terms of a cage: When someone at the pet store shows you a cage as being the "right" size, get the next one bigger. The more room the happier the bird I have found. Good luck.

I also have a Sun Conure, and he can be loud, but I know I was blessed because he only yells whenever he wants attention and knows I'm in the room. However thats not the case they are very loud same with Jendays and Nandays. I have heard that Green cheeks are very sweet, and not as loud, I wouldn't mind one for myself! But I wouldn't recommend a sun for a family cause they tend to be scared of kids, and tend to like to love on one person at a time! Mine is scared of anything under 4 feet, but he is a total clown, and will whistle and make funny noises to get my attention, fun bird, but wouldn't recommend for a family!

Like Miss Monica I have a Green cheek also. And it is very sweet. I also have a Sun Conure. It is very sweet too but very different bird. If you get a bird it's best to get one that is almost weaned but you would still hand feed for a while. make your choice very carefully. A well taken cared of Conure can live 30 years...

Can really talk. Often affectionate if hand-fed, but they like to nip. Make a giant squawking racket 24/7 their entire lives. Need a sizable cage. Like to make a mess if ignored. Are real smart. Can make great pets if you can accept the fact that they squawk, whistle, chatter ALL the TIME!!!!!! Sun conures are great pets, but if noise bothers you...think twice!
