A Doctor of Optometry (or Optometrist) is an eye care professional who is a primary care practitioner for most vision and ocular health concerns.
Optometrists hold the degree OD (Doctor of Optometry).

By convention the term ophthalmologist is more restricted and implies a medically trained specialist (MD). Since ophthalmologists perform operations on eyes, they are generally categorized as surgeons.

An Opthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in diseases of the eye.

An optometrist is a licensed professional, but not a medical doctor. These are people who usually work in eyeglass stores. Their main function is to prescribe glasses or contact lenses and give routine eye exams. If you have no real issues with your eyes 9 times out of 10, an optometrist would do, if you have real issues, see an opthalmologist.

An Optometrist is a person with a Doctorate of Optometry (O.D.), the study of the eyes. These doctors are not M.D.'s but have gone to a special school which studies the eye.

An Ophthalmologist is a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) who has completed medical school and specialized in the eye.

Note, both Opthalmologists and Optomestrists are Doctors ... They simply have differenet doctorate degrees.

An optometrist knows a good deal about eyes, prescribes the power of the glasses or contact lenses you may need, and can recognize diseases of the eye, but is not a Doctor of Medicine. An ophthalmologist is an M.D. who has received advanced training in the field, and can, for instance, perform cataract surgery, which an optometrist cannot. Unless there is a problem with your eyes apart from short or long sight, an optometrist is perfectly adequate and he himself will advise you in case you need to see an ophthalmologist.
