A referee may cheat as he can count the number in a fast manner and thus giving less time to the boxer lying down to recover and get back to the fight. On the other hand, if we fix certain amout of seconds, nobody will feel that the refree has cheated him by counting hurriedly.

Not only does the Referee count, there is a official Timekeeper that is also keeping track of the knock down time. You'll notice when a fighter gets knocked down during a bout and it is ruled a knock down by a punch, the Referee orders the fighter that knocked the fighter down to the furthest natural corner then the count begins by both him/her (the Referee) and him/her Timekeeper, he/she can not cheat by a fast count because he/she has to hold up his/her fingers as he/she is counting. The Referees in most states are usually and should be licensed professionals and take his/her jobs very seriously. In all the years I've been around boxing (more than three decades) I can honestly say I never heard of a match being lost because the Referee counted too fast. Thanks for the great question Dan.

Because it's entertainment first, and everybody loves a good show, the more xfactors and controversy the better. It allows everyone to believe they won. Everyone likes to be a winner.
