Well, my eldest had a dummy at bedtime until her fourth birthday, when we persuaded her to give it up to the fairies. My youngest sucked his thumb, and stopped at about the same age. I know children of six who still have dummies at night. I don't know - I suppose it's whenever it seems right. One thing's for sure, they won't be going to their friends' houses for sleepovers with a dummy.

When they get to about 1-2, at the age where words are starting to form, as having a dummy will make it harder. Instead of using a dummy, try a substitute. If your child gets fretty, put them in a naughty corner, and tell them you won't play with them til they have calmed down. Your child will soon get the picture.

2 ideally but lots go on up to 4 or 5, it is OK if it is just at bedtime. If you let them have a dummy all day they will ruin their teeth. It looks bad when a child over 2 wanders about with a dummy in their mouth.

Before their first birthday. Soothers were invented to soothe young babies (newborns, really) in the first part of their lives when they did not have commincation abilties, and hadn't learned to soothe. Young infants use the suckling instinct for food of course, but also to soothe and relieve stress levels.

I think babies at 6 months should be dummy-free.. and a stretch is until their 1st birthday. They're not helpless babies anymore at that point and do have other skills and abilities to help them deal witht he world around them.

Of course, it depends on what people use the soother for: if it's in the child's mouth 24 hours a day no matter how happy/upset or the activity level.. then the child will be "addicted"and it will become more than a soother... reversing this dependance is alot harder than when parents use the soother (dummy) to help the baby soothe... WHEN HE NEEDS IT.. which means not every minute of every hour of every day.

Should never give a child a dummy. They don't know what they are and it's one less thing to cry about

If by dummy you mean pacifier; around 1-2 years old. If you are still not sure, check with you child's pediatrician for further advice.
