I don't know...I think you would just have to adapt training to what the dog could understand!

Good luck and great job getting a rescue!!!

Certainly a challenge. You should be able to train him using the same methods that I would usually recommend - either luring or capturing the behavior followed by positive reinforcement. Luring = having the dog follow a treat or toy to get him into position. Capturing = reinforcing when the dog does the behavior on his own. For instance, all dogs sit or lie down at some time. When he does, be ready to immediately give him a treat or petting. The tough part is cueing the behaviors. For him you will need to come up with a system of touches or vibrations to be the cues. For instance, one finger on the rear could indicate "sit." Two light touches on a shoulder could indicate "down." Stomping the floor twice could be "come."

For daily care, make sure he is always on leash or safely confined. Make sure he is microchipped. Walk him through your place, helping him find the doors, furniture, etc. Keep things in their place as much as possible. No leaving things on the floor, etc. or he will trip. Go to www.dogwise.com for books on living with deaf or blind dogs.

I hope it works out for you both!

You are going to have to be very, very patient when getting a special needs dog. I would teach the dog by touch, i.e a hand on the but to sit, a touch to the back of the head to stay etc. and by leading the dog with a leash around your home for quite awhile so he/she can get a good sense of the environment. You are a very kind individual for taking a dog like this.

Honey your best bet would be to take him to a trainer who is experienced in that. It would be different if he was only blind. It will be very hard since he can not hear your commands as well.
