It depends on the people involved.

If you're good friends, both unattached and trusting of each other, and the 'ground rules' are that it's sex, pure and simple, and not meant as the beginning of a relationship and that it *stops* as soon as one of you finds a bf/gf, then it can be very good for both of you and less risky than with someone you're not as familiar with.

If one of you has other motives (like wanting to start a relationship other than friendship) or could become jealous if the other friend were to start a relationship with someone else, then you are not going to be able to work it out without hard feelings and still be able to keep the friendship intact.

I have a friend back home with benefits! And is great, cos it feels really close and nice. And it means we can cointinue being mates what ever happens! Unless you know him for a short period of time and dont really know him.
Trust is important, whatever be the boyfriend or a friend!

good at the time, but someone always get attached and ruins all the fun. The worse part about it is, that when you have to break it off the attached get hurt and will no longer be your friend. Which isn't always a bad thing, cause they've kinda of served their purpose by then.

If thats what you want then go for it. Its a good way to let off steam. Better than with a stranger.

Bad, because someone's heart will be broken, no matter what the "ground rules"
