Depends on what you want the house to smell like....
I've always been partial to boiling a small pot of water, tossing in a cinnamon stick, some cloves, & orange rind and letting it simmer for a little while.
You can also do the same with some vanilla extract.

This is super easy and cheap. Get a pan of water and bring it to a boil on the stove. Add in cloves, cinnamon or allspice, orange or lemon peels - any or all of the above. Cut the heat down to simmer, and let these simmer. Your house will smell wonderful! I do this all the time - especially at Christmas time. Just remember to keep adding water so that the pan doesn't dry up.
Another way to do this is to get an aluminum pie pan and put about an inch of water in the bottom and sprinkle your spices in. Place in a 250 degree oven. This takes longer to start smelling good, but it is great!

Baking soda is works particularly well for absorbing odors. Also, opening your window and allowing your house to air out helps with odors too. Did you know that odors can actually get trapped in the walls? If this has happened, try painting the walls. If you don't want to go through the stress of painting then here is some information I found on the internet "Some odors can be eliminated by strategic cleaning or repairing of specific source areas. Other odors can literally be impregnated into the walls, woodwork, carpet, sub floors, window treatments, etc. These difficult types of odors are best eliminated by "purifying" the air (not filtering). The purified air then goes everywhere the odors went to annihilate them. Air purifiers work on the same principle as the air outdoors, which by the way, is why we go "out" for fresh air. Portable air purification systems can be purchased or rented for this purpose. They can also be used continually to prevent odors and reduce air contaminants. " Hope this helps.

Well the several choices really, you don't want store bought right? So you can either go get some lemons and peel them squeeze them into your sinks and tubs and leave the peelings in a bowl on the counter for the day, same works with oranges OR you can buy some cinnamon sticks at your local craft store and place them around your home , lay a stick up on top of mirrors, doorways, pics, etc... or do the same with potpourri. I even take my dryer sheets and place them around the house , they work nice in the bathroom stuck down in behind your toilet tank. And I know you said no store bought but if you purchase either odoban or Fabreeze (like it best) you can use thees WITH any of the other suggestions and your house will stay EXTREMELY fresh!!!

Well, you do need to go to the store. Buy some oranges, lemons and cinnamon sticks. It has to be sticks. Get some cloves while your at it. Cut the citrus stuff into sections, and put all of it into a pot of water. Then bring the pot to a simmer, and just let it go. It will smell very good and there aren't any chemicals to worry about. Just add more water or ingredients to keep the smell going. If that's too much trouble, why not try incense?

1) Dust everywhere. Open up all the windows.
2)Sweep.
3)I use mr. Clean for all the tiles and bath fixtures and floors.
4)I use windex in the kitchen for all those appliances.
5)Febreeze all your cushions, rugs(living area & bathroom), beds, shower curtains, pet areas, couches and shoes.
6)Buy "oust". It is a very good air freshner. Have candles and plants.
Don't use the plug in air freshers - they catch fire some times.

Opening the windows helps to air out the house. You can also add air fresheners to your A/C or heat. Popourri also helps as well.
If it's for a short while you're trying to make things smell different, you can always bake. Cookies are good for giving a house a great welcoming scent. :-)

I ALWAYS have a little pot of lemon juice, cinnamon sticks and cloves on my stove. When I want my house to smell good, I turn on the pot and after a few minutes, it's lovely. When I shut it off, it still makes the house smell great. It's less expensive than areosol scents, candles, febreeze.. and it smells so much nicer and lasts longer.

The glade plug ins that switch from one scent to another work well. There is carpet deodorizer that is a powder you put on the floor and then sweep up after 15 minutes. I also use Febreze Air Effects on my curtains, clothes. and furniture. There is also stuff you can put in your sweeper bag that smells good when you sweep. Bowls of potpourri around the house is nice. There are also warmers you put scented liquid in that work well. That is all I can think of.

I would find out what is making it not smell good and get rid of that. Then I would do a real good cleaning job. Pinesol can deodorize almost anything. Good Luck.
