I hope this helps, I bought & read Cathy Howse book about Hair Growth from her UBH publications website.
Commonsense: Keep your scalp AND your ends clean! The ends are what breaks off the most; hair is ALWAYS growing but if you want the growth to show, keep your ends on your head by taking care of them, not necessarily your scalp! Wash hair every day, or every other day, but no less than every 3 days. And trimming is okay if you want it to look even, but it doesn't make your hair grow faster, because everyone (unless they have a medical problem or something wrong) HAS hair growth; the problem is that some person's ends break off so much that they can never see the extent of their own hair growth. So keep eating protein, keep getting all your nutrients but do take care of not brushing or combing your ends to harshly and wash out all the styling product at then end of the day of usage so it doesn't break your hair off.
Hope this helps.

More protein, a special type of shampoo, massaging your scalp to stimulate hair growth, braids because the roots are pulled and thus stimulated to grow as well, etc. Apparently all of these things can aid you in speeding up the hair growing! Also, remember: about 1.5 cm grow by the end of each month. Nice, huh? Well, whatever you do-- don't get extensions!! You want to be natural and proud, girl. ;) Beauty made out of illusion is NOT fab. Trust me.
Hope this helped and good luck! :)

If youre not into taking vitamins....try changing your diet...yes there are certain foods to help grow hair...they even have a weeks sample diet on this site...
http://www.growafrohairlong.com/foods.html
Also check out the forum below...women are using a ton of products from essential oils (rosemary, lavendar, emu oil and such) have been known to grow out hair....neosporing, and monistat....(Yes..that monistat)...that's off the chain..I can't do that...but do a search on there for MTG or Shapleys MTG...it guarantees growth..I'm using that right now...and it really does give you an inch within the first week...and 1 to 2 inches a month.....they also have growth challenges that shows progress for each technique...so you can see what's right for you...

Try Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner. It was orignially formulated for horses, but it is sold in drug stores. I used it for about three months and my hair grew 4 or 5 inches.

Massage your scalp. Also, make sure your hair still gets trimmed regularly, it'll grow faster when it's healthier.
