I am a mechanical engineer, but I never had the chance to play with robotics. My goal is to get into robotics, without spending a fortune.

I need to build something real simple. I am looking for some sort of a kit with a tutorial (that ideally explains "why" and not just "how").
Does any one have any advice, on where to start? I need stuff that can teach me robotics, not just how to assemble a toy!

Is there such a thing?

Geeks have been very taken with the Lego Mindstorms products for learning about robotics. They are quite sophisticated, but not really cheap. I've seen a robot built from them which solves Rubik's Cube, and another which serves as a tape library for a tape backup system on a server!

If you really want to go cheap, though, and aren't afraid of a soldering iron, check over at Amazon.com and search for "robotics". There are a large number of introductory books that allow you to build robots with mostly off-the-shelf components.

it would want to be of your staggering interest to commence studying the ability of programming with C or Fortran seventy seven, such languages as those are prevalent as extreme-element languages and provide English statements in replace for executing gadget code in the back of the scenes. After writing some code in those languages, once you get into assembly languages you could recognize the simplicity and clarity of extreme element languages. have interesting!
