This is their comb. The barbs on the tongue smoothe the hair and remove debris.

There is actually all kinds of reason as to why a cats tongue is rough the way it is. It helps them to clean thier fur better, and also to grip thier food & water to get it in their mouths. Have you ever watched a cat drink something? You wonder how in the world it gets anything in it. It will never raise it's head unless someone or something moves then it will turn and look. Who don't though? Some people might disagree with me but I personally think female cats are the cleanest pets. Male cats will mark thier territory(ya know how your man pee's all around the toilet seat) That is the way a male cat is. Boy do they follow suit or what. Male cats will go in the tiny little spaces you wouldn't think of them going to use the bathroom but they will so watch out for that cat in the house.

Taylor W is correct. Their tongues are designed to tear meat off of bone. Lions and other big cats have the same thing.

cats tounges are so rough because their wild ancestors like a cheetah or a lion or tiger, eat meat and they have rough tounges like sandpaper to like the juicy meat off the bones of an animal!
And the house cat uses it tounge to lap up water and clean their prety selves!

Its because they lick up their food, and to do so you need a little friction. You cant lick up milk like they can, but thanks to their rough tongues they can.

you see those bumps are like hooks so they can pick up the fur when they lick themselves and milk and water when they drink and some foods when they eat understand
