How old is your cat? That might play a factor in it.
Ours does the same thing, but she's 16 and she's deaf, so she basically howls every so often, even if it's over nothing. She'll howl as she enters a room until people look at her, it's kind of like affirmation that she has adknowledged company. She also cries just before she lies down sometimes. No idea why, it's just in the nature of cats!
It could be because it's hungry, but I'd doubt that if it's the middle of the night. It could also be a call for attention from you, just because it's lonely?
I think it's probably nothing out of the ordinary, but if you find it concerning, you should take it to the vet. :)
Good luck.

Gag it at bed time!!!
No, seriously, we've got two cats, they are brother and sister. we live in a flat and the cats are free to roam from room to room.
If at night the boy cat wakes up but doesn't know where his sister is, he usually walks around miaowing.
I don't know if he does it because he is lonely or he wants attention. His sister usually ignores him anyway. the cats use a litter tray and never go out, you can leave the front door open and they still won't go out.
I also don't think it has anything to do with mating, as both cats were spayed at early age.

My cat does that too, but she is always carrying a sock in her mouth when she does. I was told that if the cat ever had kittens, a lot of the time they are crying because they are looking for their babies. Or it could be it is just trying to find you. Usually if i SAY MY CAT'S NAME, SHE WILL STOP AND COME INTO THE ROOM i AM IN AND LAY DOWN.

Could be for a variety of reasons. Check the food and water dish make sures its full. Kitty may want some attention; may just want to get up on the bed and have a scratch...give it some lovins'; or it may want outside to hunt. Sometimes its hard to tell with cats.

Does it want to go out? I put my cat out last thing at night before I go to bed, and she comes back in the morning.

Sounds like your cat wants to go out and play, both mine sleep all day and go out at night, but they have been done so they can't have kittens.

Dont know, but mine does it too. Very very very loudly in the middle of the street. She wakes the neighbours up even.
If I go out to her, she is just sat their miaowing at the floor or a wall or the grass.
Totally bonkers, no reason for it as far as I can see.

More details please.?
If it is a female, it could be in heat. My mother-in-law's cat does that. Female cats seek out a mate when it is their time. some will cry, pace back and forth in front of windows, or scratch at the door.

You didn't mention her age, but older cats tend to become a bit senile (really). I have a 15 year old cat who does this.

I have a female (spayed) kitty that does this. My vet told me to ignore her because if I acknowledge her it provided positive reinforcement for a negative behavior.
I also feed my cats on a schedule so that they know when its time to eat and time to well, play or sleep.
