My dog does that all the time. She only breaths really hard when she is dreaming like that. Sometimes it takes them a few times before they wake up because they are in a deep sleep. Think about when you are in a dream that seems like it's real. It takes you a few to wake up and realize that it wasn't and takes you some time to calm down. Same with dogs. If your dog starts breathing like that all the time and it's not hot out, then I would be concerned.

It was most likely a dream. Sometimes my dog, in her sleep, makes BLOOPing noises like "Whooop whooooop whooooop...." and shudder a lot. The breathing hard might mean she's in heat which is like well...you know....but for a dog, once a month. She can get pregnant in this time so, unless you want a litter and usually if it happens when it gets away, a mutt litter, keep her inside or on a leash. I doubt she's sick, but I'm no vet, so call one and describe the sypmtoms.

I think it was a bad dream. My dog sometimes get shaky when she's sleeping but never choking.
You should go to the vet for a check up. Just In Case.

it was probably a dream, my dog has been known to run in his dream with his legs flying while laying on his side, not sure about the choking though might want to call your dogs vet and ask

Yeah, she was probably dreaming. Next time, try touching her gently to wake her up. To be certain, please ask a vet for advice. She could have suffered a seizure. In that case, she may be very ill. Be on the safe side, call your vet A.S.A.P.

Depending how how hard she was shaking, it could have been a seizure. however usually they last longer that what you have mentioned. i wouldnt be too worried right now but if it reoccures you should keep track of how long she shakes and is in that state and call the vet...

if she was normal when she woke up then you shouldnt worry, i mean you cough in your sleep somtimes too right? dogs dream and so do cats, dont worry. if the dog was coughing or snraling in the sleep stage its like you talking in your sleep.

it was probably just a "bad dream" or something of the sort....my 5 month old puppy will growl and bark in her sleep all the time.
No harm done....just a bit annoying (not to mention unnerving).
