Last time I was in the city, I remember seeing a lot of small black sedans. I *think* I remember them being Mercedes C-Classes but they could have been Lincoln towncars or something, but I asked my dad why there were so many and he said because people take them sometimes instead of taxis. (we always just drive because we live about two hours away) What are some companies that provide them, and how does the "reservation system" work? And does the chauffeur usually open the door for you? :]

They have a series of car services available. I suppose the most popularly advertised one would be Carmel (212-666-6666) or the Tel Aviv AKA the 7's of New York (212-777-7777). Generally you call them up and you schedule a time and date you would like to travel with them. Ultimately they aren't really a chauffeur service they're more drivers for hire so you won't see them getting out of the driver seat to open and close the door for you. They have some corporate car services that use finer automobiles, i.e. BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Maybachs etc., but be prepared to spend a pretty penny... these services are reserved for the big spenders, but they'll probably open and close the door for you.

most of them are Lincoln Towncars
Majority of them are car Service... you wont be able hail them in the streets. but to call up a dispatcher company to send you a car
i.e. 212-777-7777 for tel aviv and 212-666-6666 for Carmel

one good thing about Car Service is that its a predetermined price from A to B... so if theres traffic... you'll be getting the better end of the deal...

alot of car service drivers are upgrading to more Luxurious vehicles like Mercedes S Class, and BMW 7 Series...

They're owned by car services. If you live about 2 hours away, look into a limo company in your area, many of them offer packages into NYC for either the Town Cars or one of their stretches - depending on your needs. They're not cheap, you do usally pay any tolls too, but IMO worth it for a night of partying or for a special event so you don't have to hassle with driving in, not being able to drink, and having to park your own car.

Its a car service. You need to call and reserve them. They aren't taxis where you can walk up and get a ride.
