According to Sir Iain Blair today residents of the UK are enjoying feeling as safe in their homes as they did 25 years ago. In particular he noted that burglaries in Haringey (North London) were down by 6.9%. Do you agree?

No! and nobody in their right mind, would. If you were a complete cynic though, you could argue that, by leaving your door open you are avoiding the need for them to break in, thereby doing even more damage. Why not go further, and leave one hundred pounds on the sideboard, so that they may leave your house undisturbed, and you may even get a thankyou note. Just trying to help my friendly local house burglar. And no nasty barbed wire or other obstacles, that isn't cricket.

Of course I would leave them open - WIDE OPEN. At the same time I would send out engraved invitations to all burglars - local and otherwise - inviting them to come help themselves!!! But then that would not constitute a burglary!

Burglaries may be down 6.9% in ONE London borough - what about the rest of the country - and how many burglaries does 6.9% represent?

What a ridiculous thing for the man to say. They really need to enter the real world and get off their pedestals!

I live in a decent area but it doesn't stop the scoundrels coming in from other areas. I keep my bedroom window open most of the time but I live on a main road and have elderly neighbours who take note of things that are happening! I would never leave any other windows open and I make sure that I close the curtains and doors at the back of the house to make sure that burglars are not tempted near.

I don't really have anything worth pinching anyway but still would not want an uninvited guest.

Not whilst I was out. It would be a very silly thing to do would it not?

Could be that the number of burglaries appear to be down in North London because people realise that the police are just too busy to attend the crime scene.. so I am sure that many burglaries go unreported.

I actually live right next door to a police station! Even so, I often leave the upstairs windows open a little, but I shut the windows downstairs if I'm leaving or just going upstairs for the night. And I would never leave the door unlocked, not even just to run across the street.

If I lived in Harringey now, I would have bars on my windows and doors. Many years ago Harringey was a nice place to live and yes I would have left my doors and windows open - not now.

In other parts of the UK - no, but then it depends on where I lived.

I now own in Ireland and where I live, I have left my street door unlocked over night and windows open, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Where I live there, I am safe.

Being a Police officer, I get fed up with attending burglaries where people have left a mobile or laptop beside an open window. It's careless and people don't even seem that bothered they just clain on their insurance policy.
I dont think we should deal with burglaries where the property was knowingly left insecure. You wouldnt expect your car insurance to pay out if you crashed when you were drunk, would you?!?

I probably wouldn't if I lived in London, but according to my Police Force, I live in the safest area of Sussex. I still wouldn't leave my doors and windows open all the time. You might as well have a big banner across your front door saying, "Take what you want, and do what you like to the people in this house".

I disagree. I shut and lock everything when we're out, although I have been known to forget and actually went out once leaving my front door wide open. Luckily the video was still here when we got back!

We sleep with the bedroom windows open at night, but I won't leave downstairs windows open. I'd be worried about someone getting in. Not that we've got much worth nicking.

Iain Blair is talking from his backside as usual. we might as well leave all the doors and windows open because Chevs make a unsightly mess when you do keep the ruddy doors and windows bolted like fort knocks
