My neice did something great to help me, and I want to get her a surprise to thank her. She lives 9 hours from me, and I don't get to see her very often, so I want to make it extra special so she knows that I appreciate her help, and also that I am thinking about her even when I'm not there. She is 8, but emotionally she's much older (she helps take care of her disabled mother, so I'm not just saying that). Any help will be great. Thanks!

She sounds like a pretty special young lady! My suggestion would not be to get her something mainstream such as music or video players, but to get her something that says, "You know what, you're special." Perhaps go to a book store and buy her a book that talks about how much you appreciate her, or how much you love her. Also consider making her something special, such as a jewelry box she can always treasure.

Treat her to a big girly day - hair, nails, clothes, the works. Ask her what she'd like to do after that, like see a movie or something fun...I'm not really sure what eight-year-olds are into. Buy her her favorite DVD or take her out to lunch...

I think a whole day of quality time with Auntie doing things that interest her would be a lot more valuable than just getting her something from a store.

She sounds like a sweet kid that deserves every bit of it. Big hugs for her from me!

Give her a break. When I was her age my parents worked all the time and I would take care of my mentally disabled brother. What's really needed are little mini vacations from the stresses of everday life. So why not set aside one day were she can get away, be it a movie and lunch or anything. Trust me she will appreciate it.

I think a trip where she can relax would help. Or even a trip to Disneyland or DisneyWorld. I am sure that she wants to feel like an 8 year old sometimes and have the 8 year old life.

well maybe you could take her to the zoo or something like a science museum, young children really enjoy that. i have a cousin who is 7 and he loves the zoo. i wouldnt say something like a present because is something you just give her. if you live so far from her, once you are there with her spend the most time you can by her side and let her know how helpful she is and how much you love her for that.
good luck

very nice oof you... well if she is very mature because she has to take care of her mom I think the best thing you can give her is a day where she can be a just a kid, take her to a playground, to the movie, plan a wholeday.
My 13 years old niece always had to take care of her youngest brothers, since she was 5 so every time she came home I would give her a kid normal day.

I would get her a journal and attach a poem to it that you create about how special she is to you. I would then send her a portable cd player or something like that. I really feel that she would appreciate someone letting her know what a fantasic job she is doing with her mother.

Could you drive up for the weekend and spend a day with her? Take her to the beach, the zoo, a museum, horseback riding, etc. This way she gets a break, and a special day with you.

You could ask her dad or close friends what kind of things hse likes and give her a small gift and a card. Or, just the card.
