For Greensboro, NC it appears that your wastewater is treated and then goes into the North or South Buffalo Creek:

It depends...Usually wastewater goes to a wasteremoval plant that removes a lot of the solid material. The rest that is left can either be dumped out into the ocean, into rivers and in some cases winds back up in your drinking water. This usually occurs in high drought areas, or location that have a hard time locating fresh water supplies.

to a watewater treatment plant. Stuff like condoms and other solids are screened out and taken to a landfill. The solid organic matter is settled and sent to large takes with no oxygen called digestors. The remaing water generally goes into bioreactors where a specially cultivated mix of bacteria degrade organic matter and are then settled before the now mostly clean water is disinfected using UV light or chlorine. The disinfected water is discharged into a local water body where it may or may not eventually be further treated to become drinking water. The solids in the digestors can be burned and applied to land as fertilizer, or "cured" in big pools also to be applied as fertilizer but in liquid form

Your wastewater goes to your local wastewater treatment. There it gets polymerized and then gets dumped into the ocean. Sad, but true.
Water is NEVER recycled for drinking. Your tap water comes from you local reservoir.

Almost all cities have a formal waste treatment system. I can;t imagine that Greenboro is different.
Water travels to a sewer system, usually a mix of wash water and toilet waste, to a holding area and is treated from there. Solid waste settles in the large pools, water is drawn off and solids let to settle and dried, until fairly pure water is released to the environment; a stream or such.

Well if its like any other city, the water flushes and goes to a nearby waste water treatment facility. First solid wastes go in the settlement tank. Second, organic material is removed in aeration tanks, Third, water goes through chemical treatment to kill bacteria, etc...

To the municipal waste water treatment plant. Solids are removed and fed to enzymes. The remaining effluent is treated to remove contaminates and then usually into a stream or river flowing to the sea.

Many different places depending on where you live. My goes into the ocean so my kids can swim in it (ewww!). But a bigger question is: Will there be a cumulative effect of sewage like there is with global warming?
