It is hard for me to get out of the house to go to a class, so I would like to find an effective yoga video to guide me at home. Answers from experience, please!

My favorites are the series featuring a girl named Rainbeau Mars. (I gotta think she's the child of hippies.) She has four DVDS-- Pure Power, Pure Sweat, Pure Tranquility, and sort of introductory vinyasa practice that I can't remember the title of. Pure Tranquility is focused on preparing the body for meditation. It is a much gentler practice and I tend to use it when I need a more restorative practice for some reason. Pure Sweat and Pure Power are both challenging routines that focus heavily on core strength. She does not seem to be very Iyengar influenced, so there is no emphasis on standing poses. Her way of talking through the poses is really wonderful-- very descriptive and soulful.

I also like Patricia Walden's videos a lot. She is Iyengar trained so she offers much more thorough instruction on alignment and a heavier emphasis on standing poses. I haven't tried all of her videos, but the ones I have tried are all pretty good. I would definitely recommend the Patricia Walden videos to a beginner more than the Rainbeau Mars videos.

Also-- I like to rent DVDs from Netflix of Blockbuster Online to try them out before I decide to buy them. The library may also have some yoga tapes to try. That way I can try a lot of different things that I may be reluctant to spend $20 on without really knowing what I'm getting.

Namaste!

Yoga for Free - There is a show called Inhale that comes on the Oxygen Network at 6 or 7 am, depending on where you are. It is very good. PBS has one on Saturday mornings.

But for the video, try this website www.yogajournal.com
