Modern and kind of retro? Awesome choice! I would go with bold colors (mix of black, red, white, etc...) clean lines, and lots of shape. Choose curvilinear furniture or sharp edges and go wild with that one line in every piece of furniture in the room. There are so many cool retro styled things out there. And yard sales are a must! You could frame a vintage poster if you want to go funky, or choose sophisticated art if you want classy...

Taupe is a good color for retro or modern. Macrame is retro, I visit furniture stores when I redo rooms and check out their ideas.
