Whoever reached the discussion ground first, or had more ties to the local area could assume the role of host. The host has more standing, and can push for their gentlemanly demands.

If they reach some spot that neither has ever been to at the same time, then it would be more gentlemanly to perform the action. Remember, that being a gentleman is an exertion and show of power.

I would say that the gentlemanly act for either man depends on who commits the act first. I believe that it is neither gentlemanly nor ungentlemanly to concede to another person but it would be bull-headed and ultimately rude to force the issue once someone has initiated said act.

What is the act ? If you are talking about coming to each other on a narrow street from opposite directions, who should let whom pass first ? Etiquette says that the younger should step aside and let the older pass first. The proper thing for the older is to accept the offer graciously with a nod or a hat tip and, of course, a thank you !

The real gentlemen would the one that allows the other gentlemen to pass first. And lastly, a real gentleman would not to be kissing up to anyone. If you don't like my answer, fine.

To be a gentleman one does not try to 'one up' the other. Both are equal.
