Hi,
As Graphite electrode’s conduction capacity is high, it is the major material used in the electric arc’s in the steel industry.
Graphite electrodes are used almost exclusively within the electric arc furnace of a steel mill. So, to understand a graphite electrode, first you must understand what an electric arc furnace is.
Cheers....
Plz go through the below mentioned URL for a detailed knowledge of graphite electrodes, and the electric furnaces and for information regarding why they are used............

I am in profession and I should at least tough the question.I make electrodes for spark errosion (Tools). It easy to form shapes with graphite. It has a high melting point and easy to impart very fine details in graphite than in copper. I love this question as my profession.
