The Heimlich maneuver is a movement to help a person that is chocking.
“The Heimlich manoeuvre is named after Henry Heimlich, who first described it in 1974”

To perform the maneuver you go behind the person and wrap your hands around his belly, below the diaphragm. Make one hand into a fist and cover it with the other hand then quickly pull your hands closer to you, making abdominal thrusts on the subject. This puts pressure on the diaphragm which forces the lungs to exhale and will propel the blockage out of the person's throat.

This is a quick way to save someone who is choking on their food, but its use in other situations can be debatable. It is preferred to give a few back slaps first. If the obstruction is a fish bone or something that can lodge itself in the throat then the Heimlich maneuver can actually harm the person.

“American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. In 2006, both organizations drastically changed course and "downgraded" the use of the Heimlich maneuver. For conscious victims, the new guidelines recommend first applying backslaps; if this method failed to remove the airway obstruction, rescuers were to then apply abdominal thrusts. For unconscious victims, the new guidelines recommend chest thrusts.”

A rescue method developed by Dr. Heimlich to discharge a physical blockage when someone is choking.

Say, someone at a restaurant lodges a piece of meat he was chewing in his throat / esophagus. The Heimlich manouver would be performed by someone who grabs this man from the rear, holds his fist directly under the choking person's sternum, and quickly / forcefully pulls inward.

The sudden contraction upon the choking man's diaphragm forces a large quantity of air back up through the windpipe, dislodging the blockage and "popping" it out through the mouth.

It has saved many, many people.

a way of helping someone whois choking. somehow you stand behind them, throw you arms around their waist, make a fist positioned at their solar plexus and exert sudden inward pressure quickly and repeatedly a few times. this may break some ribs, but they are not dead from chocking. i would advise you to research it further as i am not very knowledgeable on this subject, however i saved one person,s life this way. it was a do or die situation

It is a method used to dislodge something stuck in someone's windpipe and causing them to choke. Sudden abdominal thrusts are involved.

If someone is choking, you go behind them, squeeze them (while concentrating on the ziphoid - below the chest and above abs), and hopefully they stop choking.

here's a link that explains it. It involves applying pressure to a person's mid-section to expel something stuck in their throat.
