I'll admit I used to be someone who did this while driving. I'd do it on long road trips and I needed to change positions and also when I had no AC and would need to get some air flowing under my leg. You're right, as a driver it's extremely unsafe.
Don't see what the big deal is with a passenger doing it so long as it doesn't interfere with the driver's line of sight. And it's not something that just started happening...probably just something you started to notice and as you became bothered by it, you'd pick up on it more. We used to do this as kids on family trips and that was like 25 years ago. And we're not exceptional trend setters.
But when you're on a long road trip, it's nice to be able to stretch out your legs.

I just did that yesterday.
Your question is why do people do it? I did it because I had been in the car for 6 hours and it was my husband's turn to drive. With two kids in the car you want to get to your destination as quickly as possible. You stretch in the car in order to prevent stopping (again).
My feet are not nasty. Perhaps you should go without your shoes for a while and get a little air on your feet, too. Maybe that's why your commute is miserable. It really feels good to let them breathe. Go walk in the rain or on the beach while your not wearing them. That'll help some, too.
Let me just quickly add that doing it while driving is not a good idea, and that I do not do.

If the driver is resting their feet on the dash I believe that would already qualify as reckless driving and is illegal nation-wide.
As for people doing this more generally (passengers, that is), this is not a new phenomenom. I've been seeing it since I was a kid (I'm 39 now).
Comfortable? That will depend on your automobile and your degree of flexibility. For me it can be very confortable and stretches my lower back a bit on long trips. I'm very flexible, however.
Nasty? Perverted? As long as people take proper care of their feet, they should be no more nasty than ankles or elbows or hands and except for individuals with strange fetishes, a foot is just a foot.

well, I do it a little different than what you describe, instead of resting my foot on the dash, I rest my left foot for a while on my seat, this no one notices, and the reason I do it?: I have a long commute every afternoon, and i just do it to change position and be a little more comfortable, but I wouldn't stick out my foot on the dashboard, I think the people that do that are just bored, and they know they will call attention to themselves\, but that's their purpose , to stop being bored for a while.

When state sponsored conspirators run out of tactics, they apparently improvise by taking their cue from the citizenry. Something observed as a psychological dig.
They're notorious for taking something good, and turning it into something bad. I believe they go by the name ' political police '. Pretty name for simple low lifes.
These are amoral people. Anything that happens to them, they deserve. I think you'll find them mentioned in Time Life in the series on World War Two. I think the volume titled either ' The Nazis ' or ' Rise To Power '. I'll look it up for you if you want. Let me know.
The Bavarian p.p. was on the verge of getting liquidated when Hitler won the election.
Glad you're ticked. Be aware of what's around you. These abjects are employed world wide. They're just there to make life difficult on people. Of no value whatsoever.
Incidentally, they toed the line beautifully when the weighed their options and said: " Sieg Heil mein Feuhrer. " ( sp? )
The cops and federal authorities know about them but don't interfere. Nor do the law courts. The so called intelligence groups absolutely adore them, I would assume. Hope this helps.

I think it's hot,so girls, keep doing it!
There's nothing better to see while driving in traffic than a nice pair of sexy feet resting on the dashboard. I love a nice high arched pair of feet hanging out the window so I can swerve over to try to give them a tickle as I pass by. It just make my ride to or from work more enjoyable. So thanks to all you sexy feet dash boarders!!!!
Foot Lover OUT!

It's not that I disapprove of it or whatever but I don't want my passengers doing it. It shows absolutely no respect for me or my personal belongings i.e. my car. I don't want whatever is on the bottom of your shoes or feet on my dash.
AND if you happen to be in an accident that person would have two broken legs easy as well as multiple other injuries from their legs hitting them in the chest and face. Airbags deploy at what 200mph, I seriously doubt anyone is going to be able to get their feet off the dash in time to avoid that.
And for those who do it and say, "...well, I don't plan on having any accidents..." DUH, that's why they're called accidents.
But to each his own. You want to do it fine but don't bother sueing the car manufacturer when they have to surgically remove your big toe from your eye socket.

I actually enjoy seeing a nice pair of female feet on the dashboard- nicely polished toes, wrinkled sole views, and wiggling toes- what a way to drive.

ur dumb, that has been going on since cars were invented. What makes you think it never happened because you never noticed?
My your a bit arrogant aren't you?? People do it because it's comfortable for them and they can relax.
as long as someone is wearing their seatbelt who cares?
As for you not wanting to see it, shouldn't you be driving or are you one of those drivers I HATE?
Those nosey people that stare into every car they pass trying to get a glimpse at a better life than their own??
LOSER!!
