He'll move on at his own pace. Just give him some time. Us old folks, well, we're not in such a rush to do things as you young whipper-snappers.

Give him some more time. Maybe have a friend come over with their dog when he is home so he can see that it is good to have another dog in the house. He is grieving right now as I am sure you are. Some people are open to getting another pet soon, but some are just not ready. Sorry you lost your other dog.

Tell your dad that you're saving a dog's life. Take him to this website http://www.dosomething.org and this one too, http://animal.discovery.com/fansites/aplheroes/aplheroes.html and watch with him Animal Miracles and Animal Heroes Phoenix on Animal Planet. Animal Miracles will be on tomorrow at 10:00AM, and Animal Heroes Phoenix at 10:00 PM today, or 12:00PM tomorrow, and tell him that having a dog is good for kids. If this comforts him adopt a dog from an animal shelter. After my dog died it took my mom 3 to 4 years to finally let me and my brother get a dog, but instead we got 2 cats.

Some animal shelters welcome volunteers who can walk dogs, play with cats, etc. This can work for both you and your father. If you volunteer, it can give you a chance to be around dogs who need you, while waiting for your father to adjust to the idea of a new pet. Also, ask him to go to the shelter with you sometimes. There's a chance he'll see a dog he falls in love with and you can both take him home. And don't forget -- the shelters would love to have a caring volunteer even after you have a dog of your own.

The same thing happened with my mom. Until one day I got soo pissed that I got a dog brought it home, and she fell in love with the dog, sometimes u have to make the move, cause they won't know when their ready until they know how good it feels to have a dog again.

If you have any friends who have dogs, invite them with their dog (if it is well behaved) over to your home. Explain to them your Father's issue to your friend. Hopefully you (and your friend's dog) can wien your Father from his lose and get him to move on.

Another approach is to get one or more of the dog rescue people to come over and evaluate your home for possible dog rescue. You might have to do this when your dad is not at home at first. Be sure to have plenty of rescue brochures where he can see them. Your dad might not like this, but it is a thought.

Tell your Dad than you love him and are doing this to help him thru his time of grieving.

Good Luck,

It might just take him more time.

Maybe you could look on www.petfinder.com for dogs in your area, and show him the ones you think would fit in well with your family, it might spark some interest and help him move on. I would choose ones that are not too much like the old dog.

Give your dad time to heal .It may take along time but he will come around. If he was that attached to your last dog than when he is ready he wont feel right without a dog so you will get one .When he is ready.Good luck

Give your dad some time - he'll be ready one day and it wouldn't be fair to him or to a new dog if you tried to force him to get one before he can face a new dog.

Hang in there!

Yes people need to move on but it takes time. Talk to your dad and comfort him and let him everything is okay. Everyone has to go when it's there time.
