AVPU is an acronym for Alert, Verbal, Pain, Unresponsive. It is a scale that emergency first responders use to determine and communicate the level of consciousness of an injured person.

This is a quick and approximate way of rating a person's level of consciousness. They are one of the following:

Alert
They have their eyes open and are talking spontaneously.

Verbal
They respond to a verbal command such as "Open your eyes!"

Pain
They respond to a painful stimulus (see below.)

Unconscious
They do not respond.

The painful stimulus should be something like pressing down hard on the bed of the person's middle fingernail, using a pen or similar object. A stimulus such as pinching the earlobe may well not produce a response in an intoxicated casualty. There are more painful stimuli available, but you should use these ones for preference.

Yes, but say more than that while you are standing up! If people don't stand up we will not be a free country for long.
