Dee...You're awesome.

Man! Fasting is hard, but yeah, I do every now and then. I usually fast when I need a good solid answer on something from the Lord, or if I seriously want someone to get saved.

But then, so many times, I've felt called to fast...and didn't. So many times I told the Lord, I'll fast for X number of days, and then I don't. Praise the Lord for His grace.

Right now, I can't fast.. I'm breastfeeding, but yes, I pray a lot throughout my day. I also take the spirit of fasting, since I can't actually fast right now. We have fast Sunday the first Sunday of every month. Everyone, except those who are medically unable, fast for 2 meals. We have a fast and testimony meeting and we are reminded of our covenants with God. We also fast if there is something we feel we need special help on, whether it be an answer to a question we have, or problems with family members, sickness, whatever.

I pray when I get up in the morning, with every meal, I pray throughout the day that I will know how to raise my children, my daughter and I say a prayer when I put her down for naps, and we have family prayer at night before bed. We say personal prayers before bed too. I pray before I read the scriptures, so I will understand and be impressed with what I need to get out of them. We pray at least 8 times during church services, 4 in sacrament meeting and twice in each of our other 2 classes. We are a very prayerful people. We believe that communication with the Lord is the best way for us to know what He wants of us.

Yes I do! Many people do not understand the importance, the significance, or the reason why we are commanded to fast. Just like eating food feeds our bodies, fasting feeds our souls or spirit. It draws us closer to God and Christ. I have been told that fasting without a purpose and a prayer is just starving yourself.

Praying is so essential that is the way that we commune with our Father in Heaven. Not to defile Him, but he is our "Dad" he wants us to check in and talk to Him. I pray as often as I can both morning and night and right before I eat.

Most Christians do not fast, but most pray. Fasting and other forms of penance are inconsistent with the West's obsession for excess and conveniently ignored by the Christian churches of the day. But according to both the New and Old Testaments, fasting -- quiet, non-dramatic, private fasting -- should be a discipline practiced by all Christian believers AND Jews.

Yup. And it really does work. I've had some pretty amazing experiences with it.

To WhyNotAskDon: What Bible do you have anyway? I've seen some pretty crazy answers coming from you. Now you're saying that fasting isn't part of Christianity...I guess the whole episode where Jesus fasted in the desert was just him "kidding himself", eh? And I guess when Jesus counseled his disciples to pray and fast in order to do certain things (like casting out evil spirits), he was just trying to "kid them" too?

Fasting for what? Did not Mohammed Atta fast and pray before he lead his murderous Islamic militants in murdering thousands on 9/11?

Fasting publicly, and making a public display of it, fails to fulfill the Lord's will for fasting, and is an act of utter disobedience.

Fasting is a private thing. Yes, most Christians practice it, though not all in the same way, but determined individually between a soul and its God.

For those who fast for spiritual purposes, it is private.

Islam fasts publicly, and publicly murders and publicly celebrates murderous acts.

Christians fast privately, rebuke murderers and are judged by Islam for not fasting openly.

Jesus, who Isla says is a prophet and yet they do not follow Him, says:
"When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Islam is not alone in corrupting the purpose of fasting, even Christians (in name) do so. I have observed counterfeit Christians use fasting as if they were holding themselves hostage until their demands were met by God or by people. This too is nothing but vanity.

I pray constantly, but can't fast (food) because I am diabetic. I often fast other things, like the shopping channels on TV and I sometimes park my handicap scooter and make myself walk in the house.
