Back in the 70s, it was "killer clown" John Wayne Gacy. Nowadays it's JonBenet Ramsey's alleged killer John Mark Karr. Why does the media release the killer's full name: first, middle, and last?

Merigold00 is correct -- I work in Family Court and if we only used first and last name's here, I would have met so many famous people, you wouldn't believe it!! Too many people would be in too much trouble. Even with a middle name, I'm sure there is somebody else out there going: "Hey, honest, I'm not *THAT* John Mark Karr!"

Yeah, I gotta agree with the first poster. But it doesn't always help. I have a friend named Tim McVeigh and he even bears a striking resemblance to the infamous terrorist. It causes him grief all the time!

Under the free information or open records acts more information is now available. Its seems to add more for the journalistic view, more eye catching and thorough.

To differentiate between someone else who might have the same first and last name - they don't want to be sued.
