What can caffiene do to you in the long run? I'm not a caffiene addict like I used to be while I was in college. I know it's not as bad as heroin or cocaine but is caffiene related to any illicit drug at all?

Just curious.

Adrenal fatigue and exhaustion is a big one. Caffeine triggers a response of adrenalin when consumed, which taxes the adrenal glands. Caffeine is also a vasoconstrictor, meaning it constricts/lessens the diameter of the blood vessels in the body. This can delay nutrient-rich blood flow from reaching organs and all other parts of the body, and slow waste removal from tissue. It is best to consume it in smal amounts if you can and not rely on it for energy. By the same token, do NOT discontinue caffeine use abruptly as it can cause headaches and other withdrawal symptoms. While it is mildly addictive, it does not elicit the same toxic or long-term irreversable damage cocaine and heroin can. But, still, caffeine in large amounts over a prolonged period of time will have detrimental effects on health. If you need energy try to eat better, smaller more frequent meals, less fat and sugar carbs (stay away from high fructose corn syrup and white bread/rice), increase your lean protein intake, and begin mild exercise. If you still find yourself needing a little extra energy, try Siberian or Korean ginseng. These are natural plants with extracts that boost energy healthily, and can be found in supplement/pill form or in teas. Just be careful with commercially-made drinks that have them - they usually are also loaded with sugar and/or caffeine.

I read a study on the effects of caffeine about 2 months ago. They say that it is addictive and that over use will cause it's affects to lessen. However, they found absolutely NO harmful side effects at all.
