I was wondering if anyone knew if there was any kind of assistance in housing for a single mom with little money. I may be homeless in two months, and I could use financial help to find a home. I have a full time job that doesn't pay well and I am in the process of finding a better one, but in the mean time my roommate is moving out and I can't afford to pay rent for this apartment by myself. I have no security deposit to fall back on. HELP!! Any info is greatly appreciated!

First of all, you need to apply for welfare. It's kind of nerve-wracking, but given the information you've gave you should be able to get some financial aid.

Also, should you be receiving child support? The government is really kicking down on fathers not giving support recently so now is a better time than ever to look into it.

You should also set an appointment with your church or a local one. Talk to the pastor. They will usually offer aid or a sponsor family that can send a little money each month to help with expenses.

It's important to look into local shelters too. If worse comes to worse (and I pray it doesn't) at least that way you can have a warm bed to sleep in.

Good luck.

Depending on what state you live in, there are a wide variety of assistance available. I should warn you though, that if you want to apply for housing assistance, it often means living in section 8 facilities, and these aren't the greatest of environments for a child or a single parent. First I would look to your friends and family members, maybe one of them wants a roommate. Then, I would suggest putting an ad in the paper, a notice for room mate wanted in a laundramat, grocery stores, and even at your local church. There may be someone just like you in a similiar situation. If you don't find another roommate in time, talk to your landlord and explain the situation. If he/she isn't willing to help you out somehow, then contact your local Salvation army or community center and ask about immediate rental assistance problems. They can usually help out for a month or two until you find someone. I've seen a lot of people in your situation sweetie, you aren't alone. With today's economy and job loss, it's more common than you think. Keep your head up, your child a priority and the mind set that this is only temporary. I wish you well honey.

I am a single mom and I feel for you. Do you have any family that you can turn to? Our government in this country doesn't care about single moms or getting us our child support. The best they can do is put you in a shelter somewhere and you may be eligible for food stamps and WIC. You can apply for housing but that can take 2 years! I tried all this when my daughter was born. I was lucky to have parents who could help me. The only suggestion I could think of is look in the paper, share a room, or advertise for a roommate. Advertise on food store bulletin boards for a roommate. Maybe with the help of the Internet, you may find a kind soul who will help both of you. I wish both of you the best of luck.

I'm a single mom of 2, money is tight as well. Full time work still doesn't bring in enough money to pay everything.
Look in to socail housing. Contact the salvation army, they may have emergency shelter for you and you kids until accomodations can be found. If you have to look through the govermnment pages in the phone book, there should be somehting in there for government housing. Contact your local church, they would have a list of emergency housing or know where to send you for help.

HUD runs most of their programs via your local Housing Authority. I think you'd get the typical bureaucratic voice mail hail if you called HUD directly.

AND there are many programs locally that are not run by HUD. I think the Housing Authority is your best local knowledge base.

They also should have information about first home buyer programs.. and all sorts of things. At least ours does.

I'd suggest google and type in "housing authority" and your city/state or the closest one to you.

If they can't provide instant help (most can't.. as there's a waiting list) they can usually give you a list of all the possibilities that they're aware of (i.e. short term or whatnot)

You will be amazed at how unconnected all the governmental help is. It's really sad. This day in age with computers and instant information and all.. just boggles my mind.

Well you qualify for the Fannie May foundation. Go to your local community center and ask about them. They will pay for your down payment and closing costs. All you have to do is attend a class and talk to a social worker. You can also check with you locality and see if have a Housing Authority. They put low income people in nice new homes for pennies. You should also qualify for day care assistance as well W.I.C which provides milk, formula, and food for your children.

you can get government assistance on housing for low or no income people with children...it's called section 8 housing....you can go talk to a local medicaid office and they can help you out. Especially if you have children.....the government pays for most of your rent....(i know people that only pay $20 a month for rent)....they also help you out with your power....you get a section 8 housing discount.....and apply for food stamps.

just whatever you decide to do, don't feel bad or guilty for using those resources, that is why all of the people in America pay taxes, it is there to help people out.

GOOD LUCK

Yes, Try getting on state assistance especially if you have a child. Ask about section 8. Theres a waiting list but single mothers have a good chance of waiting a shorter time. and also look in trying to get food stamps.

They say a majority of Americans are one paycheck away from homelessness, because we live "pay check to paycheck" DON'T GIVE UP! :^) There are many local charities and government agencies that can and will help assist you. Prayer is important! You can always ask God Almighty to help! (Do it in Jesus's name for best results...) Godspeed and let your fingers do the walking by calling around...
God Bless you and your family!
