No extended warranties are a ripoff

Do a lot of research before you buy, you should be able to figure out which brands last and which don't. Most come with a 1 year warranty built right in, so say you spend $1500- $3000 on the TV. How much is it worth it to you to extend that warranty? Also check exclusions. If you have to pay for repairs and not parts the extended warranty may not be worth it anyway, its labor that always costs these day. You may want to consider waiting, in 2 years I think we are going to see quite a reduction on these TVs. Need something new today? Go moderate flat screen HDTV ready for less than $600.

Absolutely. I did my research carefully and here's what I concluded when I bought my 50" plasma:

-for the time being, the plasma displays are by far the most expensive component. An errant hacky sack or, in my case, low flying parrot, could easily damage the screen

-the cost of the warranty on a big ticket item succeptible to damage is as essential as it is for, say a new car. It's when you don't get it that things will go wrong, so factor that in when you budget. An insured 40" plasma will make you happier than an uninsured 50" plasma when the parrot bonzais....

Absolutely! You never know when something could go wrong and the cost to fix the tv will be well more then the amount you pay for the extended warranty. Not only that you will be covered for several years with no worries. Pay the additonal money now - it will pay offin years to come!

Extended warranties are, as a rule, a poor purchase. This being said, if you can afford it and it will help you sleep better at night, perhaps it's worth the money - it's up to you.

I repair them for a living, and WHEN it breaks (and it will some day), you will be very sad if you are paying the bill. Our labor is usually between $250-$400 dependent upon what part is replaced, and the parts are modular and range to $1500.
