Again, I highly suggest that your friend have a trainer help (or read the very short book The Cautious Canine by Patricia McConnell), but here is sketch of what to do.

- you go over to your friend's but stay at a distance from the dog - a distance where the dog is comfortable. He should be on leash. Your friend should immediately begin giving the dog treats. After about 15 seconds, he should put the dog in another room. That is your contact with the dog for the visit.

- do this over and over until the dog seems to be very comfortable with you and realizes that your presence equals treats. At this point, keep the dog around for about 20 seconds. Repeat the whole thing.

- continue doing this, gradually increasing the length of time you are visible. When the dog is okay with you around for two or three minutes, start all over again with you standing one or two steps closer.

- when the dog is comfortable with you next to him for a few minutes, you should start giving treats yourself.

- finally, repeat the whole thing with the dog off leash.

Signs that the dog is comfortable: moving loosely, not staring at you, not snatching treats, willing to eat treats, panting normally, slow and loose tail way or normal (for him) tail carriage.

Time consuming? Yes. Effective? YES!!!!!! Do this correctly and the dog will beg for you to come visit.

Take treats. Almost all dog training is treat motivated. You are training him to like you.

Make nice with him. Take him some doggy treats and he will warm up to you because he knows you have yummy treats for him.
