Aha! A light bulb goes off.
It is actually the work of a great many people, translated and interpreted from and to several different languages and at different times in the history of the world and honestly, it can't be taken literally because we don't know what the original wording actually was and mean (except for the dead sea scrolls and even then we are interpreting through a veil of several thousand years).

I am a Christian. I believe the Bible is a great resource for Christian living and learning about God, but not neccessarily infallible. Some of the men that wrote the Bible did meet God (Jesus, for example). But you are right, many of them did not. In the New Testament, the first four books (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are an account of Jesus' life. The book of Acts is an account of the beginning of the Christian church. Then, the rest of the books (except for Revelation at the end) are called epistles, and they were letters written by leaders of the Christian church to their followers. For example, the book of Corinthians was written by Paul to the people of the church of Corinth in Greece. Paul had no idea that this letter would be included in the Holy Scripture of the Christian religion. For this reason, I do not believe that everything in the Bible is infallible. For example, Paul felt that women should not teach men in the church, a belief I think Jesus would have disagreed with. Many writers of the Bible also felt that Jesus would be coming back in their lifetime. Obviously, he did not. The men that wrote the Bible were still great men of God, but that doesn't mean they were right about everything. You have to take all of these things into consideration when reading the Bible. Jesus' teachings recorded in the Gospel are awesome though, and very wise. Overall, the Bible is an excellent resource for Christians.

Supposedly it was divinely inspired -- as in God basically whispered what to say in their ear. In fact, I hate to make the comparison, but now that I think of it, why is THAT any more valid then Joseph Smith (the founder of the Mormon religion) SEEING what to write out of a hat? In any case, there is no proof, nor do I think they will ever be able to find any, that the Bible is, indeed, the word of God. That isn't to say that it doesn't contain some good ethical guidelines for us to live by... I just think that is a very corrupt text -- even if it WAS originally the word of God! It has been edited, added to, changed, and re-translated so many times that it's hard to know if much of any of it is accurate anymore, although some of the historical events discussed in the Bible have been proved to have been true.

Good question! I've wondered that too. It seems as though it is just the word of those who wrote it, and merely their own personal interpretations of God's will. Sure, one could claim that the Bible's writings are authored by those who were heavily influenced and/or inspired by God, but then couldn't someone living today write something just as holy? I don't understand what makes the bible so special.

Just as God used Noah to carry on the life of humans and animals when He flooded the whole Earth so also does God use men and/or women to to accomplish things here on earth. Could God magicly poof a Bible here? Yes! But that's not his method of choice. He chooses to use men and women of God. and you would be seriously mistaken if you think that people in the Bible did not know God.
Psalms 14:1-The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

Why are there history books? The historians were not there to witness or be involved in the events.
Why are there biographies? The authors are not the people they write about.
It's a matter of faith. For those that believe, no explanation is needed. For those who do not, no explanation will suffice. You just have to pick your category.
And the bible was first written in Greek, not Latin.

You did error in this question in the sense that you do not know the word of God. For you to ask this questions means that you don't believe that Jesus was God. Jesus was God in the flesh. Jesus (God) was here and walked and talked with His disciples which some of them wrote parts of the bible. We know from reading the bible that the others that wrote in the old testament before Jesus came to this world were visited by God's holy angels and wrote as the spirit of God (Holy Spirit) moved them to write. Paul (who was Saul and met Jesus on the Damascus road) wrote most of the New Testament. Read and learn that Paul persecuted Christians more than anyone. He called himself the chief of sinners. So when you ask this questions, I know you do so without the wisdom of knowing that the answer is in God's word (Bible). Read the bible for yourself the answer to all of your questions is in the word of God. Oh, by the way, Paul speaks about going to heaven as some of the other apostles of God. So you see, they did meet God and knew that He was God.
Please find out who Jesus is because your soul and eternity depends on it. Don't trust another person no matter who they may be, whether your mom, dad, pastor or whomever because you will have to stand before God and be judged one day and He will not want to hear about how someone else told you this or that. He will tell you to depart from Him worker of iniquity because you have all the resources you need to ask and seek out the truth. Jesus said that if you seek that you shall find.
You see, we all will live forever somewhere. Your choices here on earth will depend on whether it will be in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ or the lake of fire (second death according to Revelation). I believe you know this as Hell. Hell was not made for humans but for the devil and his angels. They know they are going there and will do whatever they can to take many with them. Please don't let this be your fate. I plead with you today to make Jesus your choice. Repent (means to turn from sin) and trust Jesus as your Lord and Savior. I promise you that you will be so glad that you did.

No one has ever met God. Back in the beginning God spoke to people and they wrote down his words so that today God speaks to us through the written word in the Bible.
