Pins and needles

'Pins and needles' (paraesthesia) is a sensation of uncomfortable tingling or prickling, usually felt in the hands or feet. The affected area is sometimes said to have 'fallen asleep'. A common cause is leaning or lying awkwardly on a limb, which either presses against the nerves or reduces the blood supply to the local area. Changing position quickly restores normal feeling. Any numbness is soon replaced by the tingling and prickling sensation, as the nerves start sending messages again to the brain and spinal cord. In some cases, pins and needles are caused by nerve damage or certain disorders of the central nervous system. Always see your doctor if you experience frequent or persistent bouts of pins and needles.

Symptoms
The symptoms of pins and needles include:

Hands and feet are usually affected
Initial numbness and heaviness
Prickling and tingling sensation on the skin
Return of normal feeling a few minutes after changing position.

There are many reasons for foot numbness and tingling. Some common causes include diabetic peripheral neuropathy, hyperventilation (yes, breathing much too fast can cause numbness and tingling in your hands and feet), and pinched nerves.

Are you crying because of the numbness/tingling? Is there any pain? What kind of pain is it? Sharp? Dull? Constant, or does it come and go? Does anything make the pain better or worse?

Consider going to a walk-in clinic or to the emergency room. Contact family or friends to be sure you have someone to help you if you need to get to medical help right away, or just call 911.

It may be a panic attack, it may be more. You definitely need to go to the e.r. if this continues or go to an Urgent Care. Do something though, please?! Panic attacks can be extremely frightening. They can lead to hyperventilation which can cause the "pins and needles" feeling as well as numbness and even temporary paralysis! Its like a wave moving through your body. The key is to breathe slowly and relax. Breathing into a bag a few times (and I mean a few! Not for five min.!) will replenish the carbon dioxide your body loses causing hyperventilation. If this is the culprit, you may want to consider discussing a mild anti-anxiety medication with your doctor.

You may have to go to the emergency room. Numbness is not a good sign but it is possible that it is something simple like a pinched nerve.

I would call my doctor back right this minute and tell them they have to work you in...don't take no for an answer. Start crying on the phone if you have to.

Hope it is just stress. No need to panic I am sure your doctor would have advised you otherwise if there was a medical urgency to your condition.

My wife also has similar proiblems and she has it everyday especially when she is about to retire. She has diabetes and doctors say it is neuroppathy. I believe it is about the nerves not functioning rightly and so it gives this tingling numbness.

Hope you get better soon and take care.

Well the feeling in your feet is sign of a physical problem and I suggest you go to the emergency because it could be like a vein blocked or something...

If you are feeling this bad you need to go to a clinic or an emergency room and get it checked. You can't find a solution to this problem here ... go see someone who can help.

Sounds like panic attacks. When you start to feel that way you need to calm down and say to your self that you are fine, if you start getting really nervous about it, you will bring it on more.

Place your feet in a basin of hot water, it will get the blood flow
back to normal. A hot towel will also do the trick.
