Hello, I have a friend who is thinking about taking a job up in central harlem, around 135th street. Can anyone who is familiar with this area let me know what it's like? Is is safe? Dangerous? Whats around the area? Lots of people? Secluded? stores? My friend is concerned about working in Harlem, so if anyone who knows this area of central harlem can give us some info on what to expect, it would be appreciated! Thank you!

Maybe your friend can actually visit the area and decide for herself if she wants to work there.

It's mostly residential and small businesses. If your friend is concerned about working in central Harlem then she will be doomed because she is starting off with the wrong attitude. If you look for problems in the area, you will find them. Not sure what job she is considering. That might go a long way in helping with this answer.

President Clinton has an office on 125th street, I guess if she gets really freaked out she can run find him. She won't get to him, but at least in the attempt, she'll encounter plenty of law enforcement types to keep her safe.

I did a Harlem tour for my school and it was pretty much 30 white, jewish kids walking around with an even whiter looking teacher and while it didn't LOOK like the best neighborhood, i felt safe.

Some parts are secluded so I wouldn't recommend walking through those streets. Usually its the streets, not the avenues that are secluded.

its considered an IMPACT Zone by the NYPD... so there is alot of rookie cops there along with vets... (you know its bad when you see cops traveling in PACKs)

if he/she is only working there then its kinda safe... but if he/she wants to move there... hahahaha good luck... disorderly conduct, noise pollution in the middle of the night, etc

I haven't been there yet. But I know someone who bought an apt. there. they were only there for 3 months and are moving out! She told me that its very dangerous and that people walk around with guns and pocket knifes. Shes even seen people do drugs there. Its like 3 am and people are loud and having parties there. I think she moved out already, I lost contact with her. I've never been there and I certainly dont want to go.
