I am assuming that you are wondering because you've seen this happen in a film maybe. In this instance it is done for effect and to fill out time on that scene.

However it does happen in real life too. I would say it is because they died so instantly that they didn't have the opportunity to close them. Their muscles may have contracted at the moment of death and as a result stayed open.

I think it depends on how the person dies. For example if you die in your sleep you will probably die with your eyes closed. If you die let say while you were driving a car, you may very well die with your eyes open. It also depends on how/what position you rbody is in at the time of death.

when you die you lose all muscular control, so if your eyes were open, they would stay open

However this is mostly for the benefit of TV, as most people who die of sickness/old age are in a state of sleep/unconscious so have their eyes closed

Anyways- you're 11! Why aren't you out having fun with your mates!

It's actually the normal way things happen due to muscle contractions... in effect the "relaxed" position of the eyelids is open!

In days past it was common to place coins or stones on dead people's eyes to stop them opening!

Not all people die with their eyes open.. But when they do, its because the muscles that control the eyelids no longer receive signals from the brain..

It sometimes takes a muscle contraction to close the eyes, especially if you are lying down. If the person dies, they cannot close their eyes like you would normally do - so someone needs to gently close the eyes, but once closed, will stay closed.

Probably the realisation of death would make you open your eyes very wide to take in the last sight of life...

Once you are dead you arent alive to close your eyes

I think it must have something to do with their muscles, as i presume the have to working to make us close our eyes. If a person dies the muscles stop working.
Great question though!
