You'd have a hard time beating a Zeiss scope. The Zeiss Conquest 3-9 X 40 is available for a modest $399.99 MSRP. If you shop around I am pretty sure that you will find it for even less than that. Zeiss makes one heck of a great scope and in the current issue (September 2006) of Outdoor Life on page 11 there is a coupon for a $75 rebate when you buy a pair of binoculars with your scope.

I have to totally agree with CIH. The Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 is the absolute best you can get for under $400. See Link.

You may have questions about clarity and light pickup since the Zeiss end lens is only 40mm. However, I guarantee you the Zeiss 40mm will beat all American glass, even at 50 or 56mm. Go to a store and look through them. The smaller, low end Zeiss will out-perform the high-end, larger American scopes.

I too agree on Zeiss, IMHO they make the finest rifle scopes in the world. Followed by Schmidt & Bender and Leatherwood.

You might take a look at one of the Leatherwood scopes for the money they are a great value..A Mil-Dot 4-12x50 runs around $250...
