There is a spectrum of severity and sequelae. Left untreated, bacterial meningitis is pretty deadly, and viral can be painful, but usually the sequelae are less. Can result in anything from no damage to permanent catastrophic damage.
Are you asking about the vaccine? If so, I would highly recommend it, regardless of what the "conspiracy theorists" would want you to think, it is safe.

There are 2 types of meningitis: bacterial and viral. Viral meningitis isn't as harmful as bacterial meningitis, but it is more difficult to treat. Both can cause brain damage and even death in the worst circumstances.

its an infection of the spinal fluid it can cause a childs brain to swell which can kill parts of the brain leading to blindness, deafness, paralysis, speech problems etc.

It is a very, very dangerous infection. My brother nearly died from it as an infant and had to relearn everything.
