There's the Yuko hair straightening system which is becoming increasingly popular.. Basically it uses heat (of over 300 degrees) to seal in moisture in your hair and restructure the hair's protein bond making your hair healthier, smoother, sleek, shiny, and straight!

Different makers have the product. The ingredients are strong chemicals that go into the medulla part of your hair (center) where either the curl or the straight part of your genetic makeup is. It makes it "open". Meaning that it will accept any shape. Then they put in what I call the "cement" which is basically the neutralizer. That makes the hair permanently straight (since we are talking straighteners). That is a different chemical, strong also. The second chemical is not as strong as the first, but is still a chemical. I can't tell you the chemical names, but that's what they do.
