Its not cruel.
I have 4 dogs, all of which are crated when we are not home and at night. They don't mind at all, and actually run into their crates when I say "bed time". (they know a treat will be coming their way)

When you're away meaning at work/school for the day?

It's not cruel to keep him in a kennel during the day, as long as the kennel is the right size for him and you line it with some blankets/kennel pad.

If you want to keep him out of the kennel, try taking him for a nice, long walk before you leave. 30 - 45 minutes. Great exercise for you and him. This could tire him out enough to keep him from wanting to chew things.

Provide him with chew toys that he likes. Determine if he prefers soft, hard rubber, or both. Give him plenty of toys that will occupy him throughout the day.

You could try hiring a dog walker.

Your dog is chewing most likely because he is bored. That won't change if he's in a kennel. He might be bored because he's not getting enough stimulation before you leave him or during. The walk and toys should both help. Getting a dog walker for the middle of the day would also help.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with putting a dog in a crate/kennel when you are not home.
1.) it keeps the dog safe from getting into something that could cause him harm.
2.) it keeps your house safe from the dog.
3.) if you feed the dog in the crate/kennel he will come to think of it as his den. My dogs when they want to get away from everything they go and lay in their crates. It is their safe haven, den.
4.) the dog is not stuck outside in the heat, or cold.
5.) the dog is not stuck outside barking and pissing your neighbors off.
So it is not cruel. You are doing the right thing to keep your animal, and home safe.
Good luck.

If he is just in the kennel when your away...he will be fine. And as long as he has room in it. He has to be able to stand and walk around. I am just saying this because I have known of peole putting their porepuppy in a tiny little cage where it can't even stand. ButI'm sure you aren't like this. Alot of dog owners do this. It isn't cruel. Just give him toys to play with/ chew on and food and water while he is in it. Don't worry! Make sure you put something in ther for him to lay on that is soft like a blanket or if you have a doggy bed.

it's not cruel to kennel your dog. I have a pit bull and if no is home she will distroy the house. SHh's learned to actually like her pin. I just make sure that she has toy's ,treat's and water before i leave. And i give a lot of attention when i get home so she know's that she was not being punished.

Its the safest place for him!!!!

What if he were to chew an electric cord when you weren't home. He could chew a piece of something and get choked. Dogs are den animals. My two females love their crates. I no longer close the door they can come and go in them as they please but they love them.

If he stayed outside anything could happen. A thunderstorm could spook him and he could run away. Kids are getting worse and worse these days you never know what they may do to your dog. Give him biscuits when he goes in his crate make it his happy place.

No! dogs favor to sense danger-free, and prefer they have a touch position of their own. Crates could not be used as a punishment, yet could be paired with powerful reinforcement and praise. see you later as a dogs isn't saved in his crate for too lengthy or sees the crate as a foul position, it really is a ways from merciless. And as well, would you really have your dogs crated, or shifting into something risky? Leaving a dogs outdoors is in no way good, what if he escaped or became stolen? My dogs became crate experienced and actual cherished her crate. She willingly went in it on command and frequently laid down in it even even as she did not ought to. finally, we were in a position to leave her out of the crate, even with the undeniable fact that the crate extremely helped in those early years.
