my husband was injured 3 weeks ago and both of his hands have been severly swollen. Now that the swelling has finally gone down it looks as though he was burned. The top layer of skin is a dark color and is dry, blistered and peeling off. He says it itches and burns. I don't want to rub the skin raw trying to get the dead skin off, also his hands are still in a lot of pain so I can't touch them too much. Does anyone know of anything that I can soak his hands in, or apply gently to his hands to help speed along the process and soothe some of the discomfort it is causing him?
Thanks.

We have seen a doctor. Both of his wrists were broken and penatrated through the skin. He has had several surgeries.. His doctor says that this is something typical that happens because of long term swelling... and is nothing to worry about. I am just trying to find something to ease my husband's discomfort.

this is because his skin was rapidly stretched and is now recovering try to use alot of coco butter lotion to help keep the stretch marks down and also to keep the skin wet. you cant do much for him except to keep applying lotion and tell him not to scratch the itch or it will leave marks. My friend had the same thing with his feet and it was bad. Good luck to you.

Probably a good organic (natural) Aloe Vera cream or lotion would do. If you've got an aloe vera plant you could always break one of the leaves and get the gel - I used it on a few burns I got from hot oil and it healed them completely.
But what you say sounds quite severe. I'd advise to read the answers you get, but really speak to a doctor about them before using any. The solution I give you may not be appropriate depending on the case.
All the best

Hi there, if you haven't already, see a doctor. But in the mean time, I would suggest ALOE (you can usually find this in the grocery store by the sunblock). It is very comforting and soothing and makes burned skin feel good. (At least sunburned skin) Good luck!

Aloe...if you want the real thing, instead of the gels that usually have other stuff in them, go to a florist, or landscape. Cut a 'leaf' off & just spread the soothing gel on his hands.
If you can't find that, look for a brand of gel that is nothing but pure aloe gel...

he needs to see the doctor. if the injury was work related, it needs to be seen and covered as part of the workman's comp.
i'm a nurse, and this is an unusual presentation. he really needs to see the doctor.
if it's not covered by W/C and you can't afford a visit, at least call your doctor and ask to speak to his/her nurse. usually the nurse will come to the phone and get you an answer if possible.

Aloe Vera works great! You might want to get his hands seen by a doctor though.

Its torture for him I know, but it sounds like is healing fine. Let the skin shed on it's own. Spray them with Lanacane. You won't have to touch them or rub them.
