As I write this, you have had four responses, three from women and one from a bloke. The womans' replies are more detailed but erroneous.
You work mate is shy or not self confident. That probably doesn't matter as he's cute. Make the first move and ask him if would be interested to go for a drink one evening after work.

Make the first move, if he likes you then he will go for it. Ive been in a simular situation where i made the first move with a guy i'd known for two years who i went to college with. It turns out we did like each other! So dont be shy and make that move.

If u like him then u should make the move on him. Since u work with him maybe he is affraid of sexual harrasment at work. Some guys are like that.. Just walk up to him and tell him that you are going to see a movie and wanted to know if he would like to join you.. Good Luck!!

Make lunch reservations for two, then as you are walking out the door, say "Hey, I had lunch reservations for two, but the other person backed out. Can you do me a favor and come with me so I don't have to sit there alone?"

Let him make the first move. Just be patient. Go about your business. Just because he's checking you out doesn't mean he will make the first move anyway; he could just be checkin' you out.

Very casually ask him to go to lunch with you. Most likely he will say yes and if he says no you haven't lost anything anyways. Just remember to always be yourself!
