I have also met few Christians in South who do not believe in Trinity nor they worship to idols like the statues of Jesus or Mary.
I am trying to remember their denomination but can't. If I findout their name, I will edit this post and add their name.

Why is this for Christians only??
Do you really think that Christians have a monopoly on religious knowledge?? They don't, in fact at least 50% of Christians don't know the definition of 'Christian' just check these answers!!
It is quite simple, to be a Christian you must believe that Jesus was (and is)God, Jesus was his own Son Jesus was (and is) the Holy ghost!
If your friend doesn't believe all this he is not a Christian!
Simple enough I would have thought??
Now it may be that you are a Muslim??
If so then you will believe that Jesus did not die on the cross, that Jesus was a great prophet, but not the Son of God!
The Jews also believe as you do that Jesus was a great prophet, but not the Son of God! So you do have something in common.
The Christian faith is the most unbelievable faith of the lot!
But if you are just 'fishing' to find contradictions in replies between Christians you will have found them here.
That means nothing, I can give you an equal list of contradictions in answers to any question based on the Muslim faith!
In short you are all blindly following whatever it is you think you have been taught, and you all have a very basic need to believe in a God, just for comfort! All religion is just a drug, or a 'comforter' (babies dummy)!
The day will eventually come when you can and will 'spit the dummy out' and believe in your fellow man !

Christians believe that Jesus was sacrificed for our sins that we might have a chance to go to Heaven. Many people, though pick and choose what they want to believe in. I think they are in the process of searching and likely their ideas will change the more they learn.
I am Catholic and Catholics believe that Christ is the new Sacrificial lamb. Remember that in the old Testament, the Jews sacrified lambs in their worship service to God. Here is a prayer that Catholics say and use in our worship service:
THE CREDO:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth and Jesus Christ His only Son Our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, was Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was Crucified, Died and was buried. On the third day He rose again from the dead, assended into Heaven and sits at the right hand of the God the Father from whence He shall judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the Communion of Saints and the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.
This prayer sums up what we believe as Christians and Catholics. The Catholic faith was the first Christian religion and it was started by Jesus Christ. In the Catholic faith we have the Holy Eucharist in our worship service. We believe the Eucharist is the real body and blood of Jesus Christ. When we receive the Eucharist, we are strengthened and share in the soul and divinity of Jesus Christ. It is an awsome thing. Best wishes.

There are some groups that have the Christian identification, but do not believe in Christ's death on the cross or in the Trinity. This can apply to several groups, including two large ones (which I will not name because I'm not sure on the specifics)... While the details are long, they're actually a bit short in pinpointing a specific group, so I'm kinda stuck up to this point.
It might be helpful to ask why they don't believe and where do they get the basis / scripture for their belief (or in this case, disbelief)... Some groups tend to highly quote (even overquote) a certain verse or a pamphlet, which can help in identifying the group.
As to how they could be different from other Christians, it can be said that most people (not necessarily the guy in question) can be religious in the sense that they are very devoted to their group, reading scriptures, praying, and going to church, without even knowing what they believe in. Again, you can ask him the same questions mentioned above, but this time to know what is the motivation behind his "religiosity"...

If he doesn't believe that Jesus died for our sins (each one of us - individually) and does not believe that Jesus is the Son of God the Father or the Holy Spirit - then I'm sorry to say he is definately NOT a Christian.

I' m sorry to tell you that your friend is not Christian. First of all believing in the Holy Trinity is a must to be christian. Also, believing in Jesus as our only way to be saved and he was crossified to save us from our sins is the basic of christianity

Some people learn as they go along, he lacks knowledge in this area, we all do in some areas of God and the bible, kinda like a computer no matter how good you are you always learn more.
perhaps someone with knowledge in that area of trinity can explain it in a way where he would understand.
