I think a 777 flying from Atlanta to Hawaii would use about 21,000 - 22,000 gallons of fuel. I think Delta says it uses 20,000+ gallons to fly from Cincinnati to Honolulu. I am not sure how much the airlines are paying for gas but I do know the price is less than what we pay at the pump because the fuel our cars use is more refined. What the airlines will do is find out how much it will cost to break-even and also how popular the route is and then adjust accordingly. That is why the airlines come out with a new schedule every so often. The airlines are doing a better job of not flying unprofitable routes and they have scaled back on the number of flights so that is why you are seeing more crowded flights. Jet fuel is the second biggest expenses for airlines after employee salary. As for government help, I am not sure about that because America is a free enterprise and the airlines are not government run. But who knows what the lobbyists are doing.

Potato chip has the closest to correct answer, it's less than one would imagine. back in '98 a full load of fuel for a 767 from Dallas to Frankfurt (5,100 miles) cost $30,020.00
I take issue with the popular misconception that employee costs are second to fuel costs. it's management costs! On a full 767 aircraft you are paying the Flight attendants approx. $0.20/hour each. the pilots approx $1.25 /hour But the CEO is making $550 an hour. the CFO $543/hour .
it takes 12 full fare First class passengers to pay for the flight.
the airlines are making a profit, they only hide it well.
At American, they have "spun off " things like Cargo and computer management systems.. so flying passengers "looks" like a loss.
if you are paying $1000.00 for your ticket you are paying more than the average, but less than needed.
the government is actually hurting the Airlines by imposing huge taxes on the airlines.

Don't forget that you and your luggage aren't the only things taking that flight. Most airlines carry cargo and U.S. Mail as well, both of which make a tidy profit, and the airlines save shipping costs when they can by carrying their own equipment to outlying bases. If a Delta plane needed a black box in Chicago, they could carry one on their next flight from their home base in Atlanta, saving time and money by getting the plane back in the air as soon as possible.

with the cost of tickets and overhead jet fuel is about 4.00 per gallon and it weighs 6.8 pounds per gallon and probably takes 25000 pounds of fuel to go to Hawaii so if you have a 747 or 777 that hold approximately 350 to 400 people at 1000.00 for couch and 1500.00 for first class which is about 40 seats 4000 gallons of fuel 16000.00 and 13000.00 in food and 20000.00 in aircraft costs. if you have 350 passengers at 1000.0 350000.00 and 40 at 1500.00 60000.00 this is 410000.00 plus whatever cargo the carrying there not hurting

747-200 holds 11,500 gallons of fuel (usually measured in LBS.) and can fly with reserves 4500 miles.
2.5 gallons per mile.
The average right now (Southwest is paying less) is $1.81 per gallon for Jet-A.
$20,812 to fill up (from empty) not including a tip for the pump boy.
