Keep him in a kennal(spelling?), when kept on a chain or cable, the dog gets used to pulling on what is holding him back and it becomes almost impossible to take him on a walk.

Do you have a large yard? Does he stay in the house too, or is he just an outside dog? If he's an inside dog, try walking your him around the perimeter of the yard (or as far as you want him to go) on a leash every time you leave him out...after a while he will get the hint that he is suppose to stay in the yard. If he's strictly an outside dog, a kennel or a fenced in yard is the best thing. Those underground fence things don't work so well...my dog figured out how to not get a shock in no time. Good Luck!

You could do a few things:
1.) put up a fence.
2.) if there is a fence, fix the holes, or put up a higher fence.
3.) take your dog to the local obedience training center. Don't stop at just one class, you wouldn't take your child out of school after kindergarten, would you?
4.) You could put in that fenceless system, just check the batteries often.
5.) If any of the above is not an option then make sure that he has water and shelter while on the chain.
I hope this has helped. Good luck

get the underground pet fence! It is so cool...it allows them to run and play but they can't go outside the boundaries. The system can cost a couple hundred dollars. You also have to make sure the bateries are working in the collar everyday. Eventually the dog will learn where it can't go and will just stay away from that area. This system is worth the money! Otherwise I would get a large dog kennel and make sure to let him out and take him on walks and play with him! I know alot of people that just leave their dogs in them and don't ever let them out.

Its called a fence. They work wonders. Or get those shock collars. I know someone is going to say that those are cruel, but they really aren't, other wise they wouldn't sell them. My dad got that for my two german shepards so they would stay in the yard and not cross the street where they could get run over or shot. (living out in the country, people are protective of their animals, and other animals on property get shot.) The shock collar works really well. Try it, they even have a DVD that comes with it so you can learn about it before you use it. It is really good, and the shock does not hurt them too bad, it just teaches them.

Good luck.

i had a dog who gave me this same problem....i had a big backyard and i'd leave him outside when i went to work, but he'd jump the fence....so then i bought a dog kennel....i think it was something like 12' X 12'....but he ripped the chainlink and got out and then jumped the fence....i couldn't leave him in the house while i was at work, cuz it was too long for him and i didn't want him messing in the house, so he had to stay outside sometimes.....so i had to tie him up outside...i put him on a "run" so that he would be able to move around a little more than just steaking him to the ground, and also that way he wouldn't get tangled up....if you have to have him tied up just make it as comfortable as possible for him....make sure he has shade and water in the summer, and a doghouse in the winter....good luck

If the chain is long enough ( but not too long to get tangled in anything) it's ok for a while...and if he has shelter incase you aren't home to bring him in if the weather turns bad... with water etc...hope it isn't a 24 hr thing though of being chained - that would be the cruel end of it...

Carefully train your dog, either put up a suitable fence or keep it inside. Chains are not a good way to restrain a dog unattended. Good luck

Is your yard already fenced? I have heard of the Dog Whisperer but haven't seen him yet. The fact that two people recommended him makes me believe that he must be on to something. I used to chain my dog, as well, and now wish that I hadn't. Good luck to you.
