I fully agree with you; we should automate as many tasks as we safely can (and probably that will eventually be all of them).
Some people don't like this idea because they think it will make humans weak and apathetic, or destroy our sense of community, or even just plain give people more than they deserve. Personally, I'd much prefer to never have to work again than to work hard every day just for a 'sense of community'. :P

The more automation, the better.
Did you know that in the US, less than 1% of our population provides enough food for the entire country... and then enough to store away/export?
That's all because of the magic of automation and machines.
The USA is very quickly moving towards an all-management position, where all the physical labor is done by others..... and we just supervise...
Even driving is starting to become automated.
Just check out www.darpa.mil/grandchallenge/
Our very own DARPA is promoting the development of robotics so that vehicles can navigate themselves. In fact, we've already had several DARPA grand challenges (well, two)
The 2007 challenge is going to be the first "urban" challenge, where completely automated cars must run a simulated urban course, following the rules of the road, being able to navigate, pass, and drive like any human would... as well as being able to do it within a good amount of time.
This also coincides with the idea of having cars drive-by-wire. The idea of having electronic implants on the highway, relaying information to the cars, so that they can drive themselves. This may sound like Sci-Fi mumbo jumbo, and it is, but it's not that far off.
Anyways, yeah, machines don't get tired... machines don't do crappy jobs because they're not in a good mood. And finally, machines don't blame other factors for their own laziness.... because they don't need to do anything outside the scope of their tiny, automated jobs.

read the book called "The End of Work" by jeremy rifkin....it will explain all about the global labor force ant the automation of manufacturing , communication, and service industries....and whats expected to happen to the people of the world...and our country..
as far as i see it..automation and the laying off of hundreds of thousands to machines and computer driven workplaces can only lead to socialism and then to fascism or communism..who wins..???those in control and their relatives and friends,,,1984...only a little too late...
how do all the people who dont work or cant work in this type of automated economy survive and become relevant..??? crime goes up and gangs flourish everywhere..anarchy is the result...then the gov'ts put their foot down and militarys take control..all under the power of the multinational companies..who are controlled by the ruling elite..
the only way i see out of this situation is the industry of energy...using the suns, moons, and earths power as the main energy sources for our planet...refrabricating our infrastructure to move forward with solar, tidal, wind and geothermal power..all of which is free and non-polluting..or minimally polluting...once we have all the cheap and inexhaustable energy we need, then society can move forward into an age of less work and turning to the inventions and innovations that will move civilization forward into an enlightened age...maybe even an interstellar age...
remember..every machine is designed to not only take 1 persons job...but 5 or 10 peoples jobs..how do all these people pay for the goods and services these machines make and provide..??? society will need to be changed, your life will go from being defined by what you do into what you really are...
and what about the poorest of the poor..?? how does this affect them..?? they barely survive now, when a machine takes their job, who wins..???

Be careful you are speaking of a socialist state, Neo Cons will attack you.
Machines don't buy food, homes cars, clothing, How will wealth be distributed?
Do we need more lazy fat unambitious people reproducing because they have nothing better to do?
Or will we then institute one child sterilization procedures as in China?
There can be no perfect society, Because society isn't perfect! (Hey that sounded cool, I hope was the first to say it (Yea Right!)).

I'd favor a society in which the society does not revolve around producing more goods for meaningless tasks.

Your assumption is that Happiness can be derived from leisure, or lack of responsibility. Think about it carfully.
