My 16yr old Tom cat has been on lactuose for almost 2yrs now as he gets very constipated. But recently his medication is failing him. He has cost an absolute fortune as he has a few more medical problems. I would like to ask if anyone has ever given their cat any other constipation remedy, eg milk of magnesia? on the advice of their vet only. He has had badly congested bowels twice in the past and it costs almost £100 a time to have the vet knock him out and relieve him. Please help. If I don't find some other form of medication. I know by the end of the week, he will have to have another vet visit.

Wholegrain rice, boiled well and some steamed chicken cut into tiny chunks. He may, as cats do, just look at you as if you're stupid, but you never know. Also make sure he has plenty of fresh water available.

I have a constipated cats too. Our vet recommended the basic drugstore hairball remedy, Vaseline orally (what we actually use) and canned pumpkin. When our young cat died suddenly last June both of the older boys as part of their mourning process didn't poop for 5 days. They both got about 2 tsp of plain Vaseline on their paws initially. They both got another tsp the next morning, that night Jamie was OK, Jerry needed another tsp that night and by morning he was fine. We kept up with the Vaseline every other day for another week just to be sure.

Try the Vaseline, I hate of the thought of the poor cat being dis-impacted. A constipated cat is a miserable thing, an impacted cat has to be truly undignified.

About 2 months ago my 5 day old 5oz kitten was constipated and I had taken her to the vet to get an enema. They told me if it happened again to put in a few drops of mineral oil in her formula and that should take care of it. And it did! She did get constipated again and I went out and bought store brand tasteless mineral oil, which costs just a few dollars and a within about 10 hours she was all cleaned out. I would assume if it can work on my week old kitten without harm than it should work for your cat if you can get it in something he eats or drinks and use probably a bit more than that. Good luck.

homoeopathic remedies for animals are perfect.
the book by George McLeod says:
for simple, uncomplicated constipation, give the animal carbo veg.
with loss of appetite, nux vom
for accompanying skin disorder, sulphur.
all these remedies you can get from chemists and health food stores, buy potency 6c, and give one dose every three or four hours. can crush tablets, but i find by putting two in a bit of bread and putting a bit of Honey on, the cat will take it well. they really do work and cause no harm that i know of! hope that helps!

I give the cats a good dose of cod liver oil. They like the taste and it cleans them out.

Try adding 2-3 teaspoons of CodLiver Oil to moist catfood; dont give him dry catfood, ever, make sure he has loads of fresh water to drink, and add water to his moist catfood. Good luck.
