Run him more or play with him. He obviously needs to exercise!

The poor dog is bored. Play with him. Why does he have so much time alone? Dogs are social animals, not meant to be chained or fenced and then forgotten about most of the day. He's desperate for something to do, someone to be with.

For "digging" problems in general, try putting dog poop in the hole. That shows him what you think about the hole: That you massively disapprove. But don't be mean, just tell him you don't like him digging holes.

Chicken wire on the ground by the fence, buried under about 1" of soil - dogs can't dig through it. If it extends about 12" in from the fence, they can't get near enough to the fence to get through.

Also, keep your dog busy and don't let him stay in the yard unattended for extended periods of time, so he doesn't have the time to dig out.

Put chicken wire around the edge of the fence dog hate the feel of it under their claws. Or you could put an invisible fence around the inside of the the real fence but that could be expensive.

I am not sure about what condition the ground is in around the fence. Is it grass? What you can do is, buy a roll of chicken wire and you can cut it to whatever width that you want. You can secure it down with either some type of mulch or just lay it down on the surface of the grass. You can also go to the hardware store and buy stakes that are curved like a u, that you can drive into the wire to hold it down. Once you break the cycle of his habits it should stop. The dogs do not like to step on this wire, nor do they like to dig in it and get their paws caught up in it. It is not very large wire. So it is not going to hurt the animal. They also make a netting that is made out of a nylon that they use in landscapes on hills to prevent washing. They also do not like to dig in red cayenne pepper. They will get it on their paws and nose and it makes them sneeze.

If it keeps digging in the same spot then try putting a patio block or a piece of wood under the surface of the dirt so it can't dig and sooner or later it should stop.
